Liverpool's Dejan Lovren
Barkley put in a number of tough tackles during the game, including one shocking challenge on Lovren, but only escaped the game with a yellow card.
However, after the game, the Everton midfielder reportedly did not apologise for the challenges he put in, much to the anger of Liverpool's Croatian defender, Lovren.
After blanking each other in the tunnel after the game, Dejan Lovren was left more angered by the reaction of Ross Barkley than the tackles on the pitch. Speaking after the game, The Guardian quoted the Croat as saying:
“If I show you my leg, you will be like [grimaces]. It will be headlines if I show you my leg. It was a tough challenge but we have seen it many times before.
"He didn’t apologise and that is the only thing I do not like. If you make a hard challenge, then be open about it and say sorry or something like that.
"Don’t talk to the referee and say it was not a foul. I think everyone saw it, especially me, but now it is over.”
Ross Barkley - Everton
With the Liverpool squad currently suffering from several big injuries, to players such as Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson, tensions are perhaps understandably high amongst Liverpool players when it comes to potentially dangerous challenges.
It also comes as a surprise to see several Everton players, such as Ashley Williams and Idrissa Gueye, also putting in potentially dangerous tackles along with Ross Barkley not long after the Toffees lost one of their best players (Seamus Coleman) for the season with a horror injury from a reckless challenge.
However, big tackles are a part of the game, and they are also a big part of the Merseyside Derby. Fans want to see passion and commitment from their players in these types of games, and this sometimes boils over. We'll certainly be looking forward to the next time Barkley and Lovren come up against each other.
