Everton's Idrissa Gueye in action with Manchester United's Paul Pogba
The Red Devils endured a frustrating 0-0 home draw with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon, with United's chance of a top four finish now dwindling.
With a Europa League campaign again on the horizon for United, Mourinho will want to spend heavily this summer, with Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann a preferred target for many fans.
However, the Daily Mail report that Mourinho is in fact demanding the signature of a new holding midfield player, as he wants to find United's answer to Claude Makelele, who was so important in Mourinho's Chelsea teams.
It's claimed that Mourinho feels landing a true holding midfield player who can protect the back four will allow Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba to thrive, and having missed on N'Golo Kante last summer, United could look elsewhere.
The Mirror believe that United are ready to rival Manchester United for the signature of Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who has starred for the Toffees since a bargain move from Aston Villa last summer.

Gueye, 27, has been Everton's answer to Kante in the middle of the park, racking up tackles and interceptions whilst also being a relentless worker in front of the back four, meaning it's no great surprise that he's attracting interest.
However, it's stated that Everton wouldn't want to allow Gueye to leave this summer, and whilst Mourinho is believed to be a big fan, he could meet stern resistance from the Toffees, who will also have to fend off interest from Sevilla, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig.
