Manchester United's Wayne Rooney
The Hammers have been in the market for a big-name striking addition since leaving Upton Park for their new home, but failed to land one last summer as loanees Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri arrived.
After a disappointing season, West Ham need to get fans back on side – and owners David Gold and David Sullivan will hope to finally land a marquee signing this summer, especially with Dimitri Payet leaving for Marseille in January.
Now, Sky Sports report that West Ham are interested in signing Manchester United attacker Wayne Rooney, who is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season after a frustrating season under Jose Mourinho.
Rooney, 31, may have scored 250 goals in 550 games for United to become their all-time leading goalscorer, but he has started just nine Premier League games this season, with just two league goals to his name this term.
The attacker's England place is now at risk, and many expect him to leave United at the end of the season, with West Ham allegedly interested in a deal should he become available, despite his astronomical wages.
General view inside the London Stadium
A shock move for Rooney has unsurprisingly sparked reaction from West Ham fans on Twitter, many of whom feel that he just isn't quite what the Hammers need right now, as they need youth and pace rather than a past-his-best Rooney.
Others feel that Rooney would still be a great signing for West Ham, considering just how goal-shy Slaven Bilic's striker have been this season, though few are backing Gold and Sullivan to actually pull the deal off.
Not feeling the West Ham/Rooney link rumours.— Barry Russell (@BarryRussell1) March 21, 2017
Would prefer to see money spent on young upcoming talent who could become big players#WHUFC
Of course Rooney. When you don't have a DOF or a decent scouting system, you come up with Wayne Rooney and tell everyone in advance! #whufc— Rob Hodges (@RobertKHodges) March 21, 2017
Rooney and Defoe are players clubs who want to win the MLS should be chasing. Not clubs who want to compete in the Prem.— Daniel M. Ford (@soundingline) March 21, 2017
To be fair I would absolutely love Rooney at West Ham— A-A-Ron (@USA_Ricee) March 21, 2017
Rooney is the last person we need, too slow, cant play striker anymore we already have a complete lack of pace in the side. We need pace— RJTHEGAME (@emagehtjr) March 21, 2017
We aren't getting Rooney in a million years but people saying they wouldn't want him? Have you seen our strikers lol— Vince (@cenzo147) March 21, 2017
Our owners are the definition of deluded if they think signing Rooney is a) a good decision or b) he'd ever join West Ham— Matt Day (@MattDay97) March 21, 2017
@davidgold I hope Rooney rumours are nonsense. Need players in early to mid 20's hungry to become stars that the fans can call their own.— Paul Beacham (@paulbeacham) March 21, 2017
West Ham interested in Rooney rumour? @davidgold you've promised big names since moving stadiums so let's try and get this one done dg— Matt Reid-Evans (@themessRevans) March 21, 2017
Would you like to see West Ham sign Rooney?
