Well-known Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has claimed on Skysports.com that Barcelona are not interested in signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are looking to replace Andres Iniesta at the end of the season and have identified Coutinho as a possible candidate.

Iniesta, who is 32 years of age, is one of the midfielders of all time and has been at Barcelona his entire professional club career so far.

“No,” Balague wrote on Skysports.com when asked if Barcelona want Coutinho to replace Iniesta. “Philippe Coutinho is of course a very good player but Barcelona do not want to sign him.

“Barca are after a midfielder and Coutinho is more of a forward. Marco Verratti is the one they want but he may be too expensive for them.”

Good news for Liverpool fans

Coutinho is one of the attacking midfielders in the Premier League and is a key figure for Liverpool.

Balague’s assertion that Barcelona do not want the Brazil international is going to be good news for the Merseyside club’s fans.

The Reds are aiming to establish themselves in the Premier League top four in the coming years under manager Jurgen Klopp, and the presence of 24-year-old Coutinho is certainly going to help them do that.
