The unfancied striker played a pivotal role in Sunderland staying up that season.
Sunderland's Conner Wickham in action with Leeds' Dario Del Fabro
In the 2013-14 season Sunderland were doing their annual fight against relegation from the Premier League.
In that fight, they found themselves an unlikely hero. Connor Wickham, the often goal-shy young striker, found a rich vein of form toward the end of the season. He scored a double in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City and also found the net in Sunderland’s 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Two goals in a 4-0 triumph over Cardiff City cemented his place in folklore. This came after being loaned out to Leeds United earlier that season.
So, who can be Sunderland’s Wickham this year?
Once again, the Black Cats are fighting relegation to the Football League.
Jermain Defoe is in good form, but it will take more for the club to stay up then just him.
Sunderland's Adnan Januzaj in action
Adnan Januzaj must step up. Like Wickham, the Belgian is a prodigious young talent who has, perhaps, struggled to live up to the hype.
If he can find his star quality in the final few months of the season and have an April like Wickham did in 2014, then Sunderland may still have a fighting chance.
