Arsenal should axe Wenger now with Tottenham vulnerable next season

Tottenham have been superb this season but risk taking a step back in 2017/18, making now the best time for Arsenal to make a transition of their own.

Arsenal have a big decision to make this summer over the future of Arsene Wenger. Whether they have the guts to make it is another matter.

All indications are that Wenger wants to stay on as manager, with The Guardian reporting he is determined to sign a new deal.

The problem is it should not be him making the decision.

Arsenal cannot put off the decision forever, and should start preparing to move on, with the club facing potentially their worst league finish in 20 years under Wenger's management.

They might want to consider that this summer would be potentially the best time to make a change, considering how rivals Tottenham are set to undergo a period of transition themselves.

Spurs are nine points above Arsenal in the league, partly thanks to their near immaculate home record this season which sees them unbeaten at White Hart Lane.

Next season that home advantage will be gone, with Spurs set to move into Wembley for a year while the construction work at their new 61,000 capacity stadium accelerates.

Spurs look like finally accomplishing their goal of establishing themselves as a top four club, but will now be vulnerable for a season at least, if their results at Wembley in European competition this season are anything to go by.

Arsenal should look at their own situation and that of Tottenham, and make their move to axe Wenger and bring in his replacement.

Why wait until Tottenham have got through their potential rough patch and re-established themselves, and make their own post-Wenger transition that much harder?
