Aston Villa players have taken to Twitter to celebrate and send messages to fans after beating Wigan Athletic 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Villa had won four of their previous five games heading into Saturday's trip to the DW Stadium, with Steve Bruce again visiting one of his former clubs having recently taken on Huddersfield Town.

Saturday's clash was far from pretty, especially with Wigan fighting for survival, and Villa claimed a 2-0 victory thanks to two second half goals.

James Chester put Villa in front, capitalising after Matt Gilks had failed to deal with Conor Hourihane's cross, and Scott Hogan then made it 2-0 from Albert Adomah's ball into the box.

With five wins in six, Villa now lie in the top half of the Championship table, with the threat of relegation well and truly extinguished having made a slow start to 2017.

A play-off push has almost certainly come too late for Villa, but Bruce's players were certainly delighted with their win over Wigan after the final whistle.

Striker Hogan was happy to grab his first goal for Villa since his January move from Brentford, posting a message celebrating that he is now 'off the mark' in claret and blue.

Midfielder Hourihane suggested that it wasn't the prettiest of wins, but the three points are all that count, before praising Villa's support.

Fellow January arrival Henri Lansbury and striker Jonathan Kodjia also sent messages celebrating another win, with Villa turning a corner under Bruce.
