Under-pressure Sunderland manager David Moyes is facing a tough road ahead, but appears to still have the backing of the boardroom.

Adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, with survival looking tougher and tougher by the week, things are not looking good at all for Sunderland. A tough start to the season was followed by an even tougher Christmas, and now David Moyes is facing his toughest task yet after a disappointing month of recruitment in January.

However, despite these hard times, the Sunderland Echo is reporting that Moyes still holds the full-backing of the owner Ellis Short and Chief Executive Martin Bain.

This may well come as frustrating news to some Sunderland fans though. It's an unusual thing, in the modern game, to see managers backed for as long as David Moyes has been, especially considering the form and results of the Black Cats.

However, a break from the usual hiring and firing that Sunderland fans have been used to may well be a welcome break for supporters, and it will have at least allowed the Black Cats some stability over the last season. But if the football and the system in place is no good, then is this stability helping?

If in the summer, Sunderland are relegated, the club will again be faced with a major choice. To change, and bring in a manager with Championship pedigree, or stick with David Moyes, believe in his methods, and try to keep an already shaky ship steady.

If this season is anything to go by, then David Moyes' efforts at Sunderland are falling on deaf ears, and as they see other sides around them making managerial changes, with clubs such as Middlesbrough, Hull City, Crystal Palace and Swansea City all making moves, perhaps Sunderland need to act sooner rather than later.
