Derby fans rejoice as Vydra plays in his natural position

Derby's Matej Vydra scores their first goal

It may have been brief but Derby fans finally got to see Matej Vydra play in his favoured position, and they like what they saw.

Derby's Matej Vydra celebrates scoring their first goal with David Nugent (R)Vydra's goal was just his fourth goal for Derby since joining from Watford

After an uninspiring spell on the left wing in the first half at the City Ground, Vydra was moved to play in the central position of the midfield three behind striker David Nugent.

It did not take him long to make an impact as the Czech Republic international scored two minutes into the second half. It was just his fourth goal in a Derby shirt after his club transfer record move from Watford in the summer. His goal helped the Rams to a 2-2 draw at arch rivals Nottingham Forest.

Vydra was replaced by Jacob Butterfield in the 73rd minute and only played just under 30 minutes in his natural position. Despite this, the 24-year-old left his mark on the game and now Derby fans will be hoping that this will spark a revival for Vydra's career at Pride Park.

Derby supporters have been calling for Vydra to be played in a more central role after being used predominantly as a left winger since his recall to the side. Vydra's most successful spell in English football was when he played behind Troy Deeney at Watford. He helped secure the Hornets promotion to the Premier League in that role.

Vydra was unfortunate that his style of play did not seem to fit into previous boss Steve McClaren's system, he chose to play a 4-3-3 formation until the final weeks of his Derby tenure where he changed it to 4-2-3-1. Rowett decided to use the latter formation in his first game in charge of the Rams.

The Derby supporters will be keen to see if Vydra's impact from the centre of the pitch will convince Rowett to play him in this role from the start against QPR after the international break.

Here's what some of the Derby fans said after the game about Vydra:
