Matz Sels is currently playing for Newcastle's under-23s.
Newcastle United's Matz Sels
It's fair to say Matz Sels has not enjoyed the success he had hoped for at Newcastle United.
Sels was one of Rafa Benitez's summer signings, but the goalkeeper failed to prove himself despite beginning the season as first choice.
He has since slipped down to third in the pecking order, and could even be fourth in line at the end of the season when Tim Krul returns from his loan in Holland.
He is not playing for the under-23 side to ensure he remains match sharp for if he is needed in case of an injury crisis, and is winning praise from coach and club legend Peter Beardsley
Wolves' Helder Costa is denied by Newcastle United's Matz Sels
Sels featured at the weekend in a Premier League Cup fixture against West Ham, which Newcastle won 3-2.
Despite conceded three times, Beardsley felt Sels was blameless and praised the goalkeeper's performance.
He told the club website: "Matz couldn’t do anything with either of the goals. The first was a penalty, and the second was a clear header – it was bad marking from us.
"He was outstanding. He made some great saves, some great blocks, kicks the ball well, and he plays how we want him to play.”
Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot seem likely to keep Sels out of action this season, but he is at least keeping busy by getting game time.
Sels is showing that he is a good goalkeeper, but under-23 games do not provide the pressure and spotlight of first team matches which he began to buckle under earlier in the season.
