Sunderland boss David Moyes has told the Chronicle that he intends to host a behind-closed-doors friendly match, to help some of his injured players return to fitness.

Sunderland have been without Victor Anichebe and Lee Cattermole recently, and they have missed the pair badly.

The Black Cats have not looked as threatening going forward since Anichebe’s departure, and Cattermole’s combativeness has been missed in midfield.

Moyes is now hoping that the pair can come back for the run in, and he intends to test their fitness in a friendly match over the next fortnight.

“Hopefully Victor may be back, maybe Catts. How can they get to match-level fitness is the question,” Moyes said.

“We did [a behind-closed-doors friendly] last week and probably will [have another before the Watford match].”

Sunderland are set to have a break from competitive matches, due to the international break.

Moyes’ side are not in action again until April, when they take on Watford at Vicarage Road.

Sunderland need to have a very strong end to the season, if they are to avoid being relegated.

Sunderland are currently seven points adrift of safety, and they have just 10 games remaining to play.
