Chelsea striker Diego Costa was the centre of attention as Stoke City narrowly missed out on a point against the league leaders.
Antonio Conte’s side went ahead in the 13th minute when Willian’s free-kick caught out Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant at the near post.
Bruno Martins Indi had a goal ruled out for the hosts before Gary Cahill was penalised for a push on Jonathan Walters in the penalty area. Walters stepped up to convert the penalty and send the Potters in level at half time.
Marcus Alonso and Pedro both came close to putting the visitors ahead, only to be denied by the crossbar and a fine save from Grant. The visitors did finally break Stoke’s resolve in the 87th minute when Cahill turned the ball home from a corner.
There was still time for Phil Bardsley to collect a second booking for a foul on Cesc Fabregas.
However, it was Costa’s tussles with Stoke’s back four that was the big talking point coming out of the game and after the final whistle some Potters supporters took to Twitter to discuss the Chelsea forward’s actions:
What a cheat Diego Costa is, even Conte refused to send the trainers on and told him to get up #SCFC— Lynn Fradders (@Fradderstokie) March 18, 2017
#costa spitting elbowed players punched Bruno in face on floor pulled Allen back by his hair + got a yellow card 4 answering back to ref— Tracey Rimmer (@TraceySCFC) March 18, 2017
Some excellent sportsmanship at #SCFC today but some awful acting and silliness especially from Diego Costa, trying to gain free kicks :-(— Leigh Preece (@ItsPreeceyHere) March 18, 2017
