According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a summer move for Real Madrid playmaker Mateo Kovacic, with a decision on his future expected in May.
Spurs are in action against Southampton this afternoon, with Mauricio Pochettino taking on his former club without star striker Harry Kane, who is out through injury.
A win would boost Tottenham’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, but Spurs would need to bring in better signings, given how – outside of Victor Wanyama – their signings from last summer have made little impact.
Now, The Mirror report that Tottenham are interested in signing Real Madrid playmaker Mateo Kovacic, a player long dubbed as Luka Modric’s heir for club and country.
Kovacic, 22, starred with Inter Milan following a 2013 move from Dinamo Zagreb, and his performances in Italy earned him a 2015 move to Real Madrid – but he’s been lost in the shuffle in the Spanish capital.
The playmaker, who possesses great dribbling and passing ability, has made just 22 La Liga starts since joining Real, and whilst he has made 21 substitutes appearances in the league, a player of his quality and potential deserves to be playing regularly.

It’s now claimed that Kovacic’s representatives are in talks with the club over the midfielder’s future, with a possible summer move on the cards should Real allow him to leave – either for his £21.8m buyout clause or less.
Kovacic could add some guile and quality to Tottenham’s central midfield, and fans would almost certainly love to see ‘Modric’s heir’ in a Spurs shirt given Modric’s own success at White Hart Lane, with a decision on Kovacic’s future expected in May ahead of the summer transfer window.
