Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
Just as the then teenage winger arrived on Merseyside from his native Cadiz, Benitez was on his way out, eventually taking over at Inter Milan.
In the end, as Suso recalled to The Guardian in 2012, the departure of the now Newcastle United boss "wasn't the problem that I thought it might be".
Suso spent five years at Liverpool, but ultimately struggled to make a breakthrough and left for AC Milan at the end of his contract two years ago.
The 23-year-old has been something of a revelation for the Rossoneri this season, however, scoring six goals and creating seven in 27 Serie A outings.
AC Milan's Suso
But with Vincenzo Montella's side languishing in eighth position, that sort of form perhaps leaves them vulnerable to offers this summer.
With Benitez's Newcastle soaring towards a Premier League return next season, someone like Suso could be exactly what's required to help establish the Magpies as a top flight outfit once more - assuming Milan can be tempted into selling.
If so, the chance to finish his business with Benitez, not to mention the lure of St James' Park, could convince the former Spain Under-21 star to head to the Toon.
Should Newcastle United make a move for Suso this summer - could they even get him?
