Tottenham's Europa League conquerors are heading for a swift exit.
K.A.A. Gent v KRC Genk - UEFA Europa League
As if Tottenham Hotspur's Europa League elimination was not embarrassing enough, their conquerors were thrashed last night at home.
Spurs suffered a shock aggregate defeat to Belgian side Gent, losing 3-2 to a side which sit in seventh place in the Jupiler Pro League table.
The first step in their exit was a 1-0 away loss in Belgium, but there was no clean sheet for Gent last night.
Facing domestic rivals Genk, Gent shipped five goals on home turf in a comprehensive 5-2 defeat.
Having conceded five away goals, a Europa League exit looks inevitable for Stein Vanhazebrouck's side.
Their collapse makes Tottenham's loss look even more woeful, especially as Mauricio Pochettino fielded a strong side in both legs.
Spurs can blame their Wembley hoodoo and Dele Alli's red card all they like for their home draw, but the damage was done away from home where they failed to score and went down with a whimper.
Genk are not a side blessed with multi-million pound stars or household names, but they managed to tear Gent's defence apart.
A familiarity with their opponents was a factor, but Tottenham's Belgian contingent at least should have been up to speed with Gent.
Next season in European competition, much more will be expected from Tottenham.
