Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 against Gent on Thursday.
Gent's Jeremy Perbet celebrates
Tottenham Hotspur's mini-slump continued with a 1-0 defeat to Genk in Belgium on Thursday.
Mauricio Pochettino's men will have been keen to bounce back from Saturday's defeat to Liverpool, but failed to do so after a laboured performance in which Jeremy Perbet's goal settled the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie.
And the Londoners must now end their Wembley hoodoo in next week's return fixture if they are to progress to the last 16 of a competition which could lead to Champions league qualification next term.
Tottenham were without key men Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen at the Ghelamco Arena, while Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min began the evening on the bench.
And though Spurs created precious little in Flanders, it was Pochettino's decision to select Eric Dier - a star in central midfield last season - ahead Kevin Wimmer in the absence of Vertonghen which seems to have most irked the Lilywhites' faitfhul.
Tottenham's Eric Dier looks dejected after the game
This was their reaction on Twitter:
Yet another match with poor individual performances. Why Poch has frozen Wimmer in light of how badly Dier has played blows my mind #COYS— HypeMort (@HypeMort) 16 February 2017
I'd rather play three at the back with an out-of-form Wimmer than just Toby/Dier at present.— Brett (@brnurse) 16 February 2017
Seems like Poch has lost faith in Wimmer, but I'd be willing to give him another chance to put things right. Can't be worse than Dier?— Spurs In The Blood (@SpursInTheBlood) 16 February 2017
I love Dier, but please Poch pick Wimmer to partner Toby. We don't look comfortable with Dier as part of a 2. As a 3 it works!! Thank you!!!— Ian Ayers (@ayers79) 16 February 2017
Dier is bang average as a CB in a 2 how is Poch playing him over Wimmer????— dAbSpUr (@dabspur1882) 16 February 2017
Rose gets injured and we drop a formation that was working. Wimmer > Dier and Anyone > Davies idc.— MH (@llorising) 16 February 2017
You can't tell me Kevin Wimmer can do any worse at centre half than Dier does lately— Christian Wainwright (@Christian_Wain) 16 February 2017
I blame Poch. Started Sissoko and not Nkoudou and Dier over Wimmer. Very poor managing. Why make it harder in the 2nd leg.— Harps (@Harps1981) 16 February 2017
Imagine how disrespected Wimmer must feel. He hasn't been as bad as Dier and was quality last season. That has to count for something— L (@BoatsnRose) 16 February 2017
Dier at CB doesn't work, why doesn't Wimmer get a look in?— Wicks (@THFCWicks) 16 February 2017
Wimmer is not worse than Dier. Walker-Peters is not worse than Davies. I don't care— ㅤ (@Youngerweireld) 16 February 2017
How should Tottenham Hotspur lineup when Gent come to London next week?
