Arsenal star promised a big performance in Munich.
Arsenal's Per Mertesacker
Arsenal players have often come in for criticism for their over exhuberant post-game social media postings, but Per Mertesacker scored a new type of own goal last night.
The defender sent a bullish message out before the game, promising the team 'mean business'.
Ahead of the tough away game at Bayern it was asking for trouble - and the team were promptly hammered 5-1 by their opponents.
Mertesacker did not feature in the defeat but clearly had full confidence in his teammates. It was as misplaced as Mesut Ozil's passing last night.
Arsenal fans saw his comments backfiring ahead of time, including one supporter who accurately predicted a five goal beating.
@mertesacker This is gonna bang when they put 5 past us...— Hafiz (@HafizRahman100) February 15, 2017
Arsenal had gone in level at half-time but fell apart after Laurent Koscienly went off injured in the second half.
It was the second season in a row Arsenal had conceded five in Munich, so Mertesacker should have seen this coming, but evidently did not expect the team to collapse in quite so spectacular fashion.
