Ashley Williams has told Everton's official website that he believes Joel Robles has made a 'massive impact' for the club in recent weeks.

Robles, 26, came into the side in late December after Maarten Stekelenburg picked up an injury.

The Spaniard has performed well, keeping three clean sheets in their last five games, including a shut out against Manchester City and this past weekend in a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough.

Williams has given Robles his backing, praising the impact he has made.

He said: "I think Joel has been massive for us as well and he’s made some very important saves.

“As a team, we’ve been concentrating on knowing that if we keep a clean sheet, more often than not we’ll score and we will get the win."

It is crucial for a centre-back to have faith in his goalkeeper and the Toffees are benefitting from having one of the better stand-ins in the division.

Robles was a Roberto Martinez signing, after impressing under the manager on loan at Wigan Athletic.

He has never really established himself as Everton's number one but he has a real opportunity to stake his claim, especially as he is eight years younger than rival Stekelenburg.
