Sheffield Wednesday fans want Almen Abdi to replace Barry Bannan in Owls' first eleven

Please drop Bannan, Barry Bannan?

It's not even 10 months since the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder was named in the Championship's PFA team of the year, but some Owls fans want him out of Carlos Carvalhal's side.

Even Bannan himself would admit he was not at his best in Tuesday's narrow win against Blackburn Rovers - although he still provided the cross for Vincent Sasso's opener.

But having failed to start just two of Wednesday's 31 league matches this season, is the Scotland international - who was named man of the match at Wigan only two games ago - perhaps in need of a rest?

With a £4 million alternative twiddling his thumbs on the bench, it's not like one couldn't be facilitated. And calls for Almen Abdi's inclusion ahead of Bannan, starting at Nottingham Forest this weekend, are in no short supply.

Abdi was initially deployed on the left of midfield following his summer switch from Watford and has found his opportunities limited since then.

But having scored 25 goals in 131 games for the Hornets, whom he helped to promotion from the Championship two seasons ago, the Swiss could still have a role to play in Wednesday's own Premier League pursuit - along with Barry Bannan.
