Paul Merson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 15th February, that Newcastle United could end up running away with the Championship if they win their next three away matches.

Newcastle are currently sat at the top of the second tier, after Brighton & Hove Albion have stuttered in recent weeks.

The Magpies have established themselves in a commanding position to earn an immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

And Merson believes that Newcastle could now put their foot down, and cruise to the title this season.

“I can’t see anything but Newcastle going up,” the former Arsenal midfielder said. “But they have three very difficult away games coming up. That’ll be the making or breaking of Newcastle. If they win all three, they’ll win the league by 12 points.”

Newcastle have matches against Aston Villa and Bristol City at home next up, and Rafael Benitez’s side will be eager to take six points against the strugglers, before his side go into a very tough run of fixtures.

The Magpies are schedule to face Brighton & Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town and Reading away from home in consecutive weeks, in what will be a real test of their quality.

Newcastle have not proven to be infallible in 2017, but they have kept accumulating points, to ensure that the chasing pack have not made ground on them.

Newcastle drew 2-2 with Norwich City at Carrow Road last night, in their most recent outing.
