The Liverpool midfielder has not done enough to justify a starting spot.

It is fair to say that Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has not had the best of campaigns so far, with the German midfielder coming in for plenty of criticism from a section of the Reds’ fan base.

After a terrible performance against Hull City at the start of the month, Can was dropped to the bench for Liverpool’s vital Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, and the Reds’ performance in his absence suggests he will struggle to get back into the starting XI.

Can is a perfectly decent player, but questions remain over whether he is of the sufficient quality to play week in, week out for a side challenging for the title.

On recent evidence he certainly seems to be playing at a level that, for now at least, is beyond him, and while he will always have his fans, Can has not justified any hype that comes his way since the summer.

Liverpool’s performance against Tottenham suggested the tide was finally turning after a woeful start to 2017 for Jurgen Klopp’s men and Can may wonder where his next start is coming from now the Reds only have the Premier League to fight for.
