Could Billy Davies appointment see Glasgow Rangers go head-to-head with Nottingham Forest for Ipswich Town defender Luke Chambers?

Chambers was a regular under Davies - one of the main contenders to replace sacked Rangers boss Mark Warburton at Ibrox - when the Scot was in charge of Nottingham Forest.

Ipswich Town's Luke Chambers is set to become one of the summer's most sought-after free agents, with manager Mick McCarthy admitting the Tractor Boys may not exercise their option to extend the defender's contract by a further year.

Nottingham Forest tried for their former player on deadline day (Nottingham Post), and will almost certainly return for the 31-year-old if he is to leave Portman Road at the end of his deal.

The Reds, however, could have competition from Glasgow Rangers if the Scottish giants appoint Billy Davies as their new boss.

Davies inherited Chambers during his first spell at Forest, using him 95 times during his two-and-a-half seasons in charge - the last of which saw the versatile defender crowned club player of the year. But by the time of the Scot's return to the City Ground 18 months later, his key man had left for Ipswich.

As luck would have it, though, there could be a vacancy for Chambers at Ibrox this summer, with Rangers centre-backs Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos both out of contract and the future of another, Rob Kiernan, said to be up in the air.

And, with nearly 400 Championship appearances to his name - many of which while captain of both Forest and Ipswich - Rangers could do a lot worse than to sign the former Northampton man, as either player's replacement.

Would Chambers be a good recruit Glasgow Rangers?
