David Moyes suggests Sunderland are not lacking effort

Sunderland were beaten 4-0 by Southampton at the Stadium of Light in their most recent match.

David Moyes has told the Chronicle that he disagrees with Sunderland supporters who suggest that their side are not putting in enough effort.

Sunderland supporters were left frustrated after the Black Cats were beaten 4-0 by Southampton in their latest outing.

The Saints ran riot at the Stadium of Light, as Moyes’ men fell to yet another disappointing defeat.

However, the Scottish boss insists that Sunderland’s players are not losing because a lack of effort.

He said: “I think some of that was because of the period in the game, the time in the game.

“Look, I don’t think anybody goes out not to do their job. I think the players have given their all, it’s certainly not their effort. Maybe it’s quality, at times, whether it be on the ball, passing it or controlling it or defending and doing the right things.

“But I don’t think it’s their effort I could question, I don’t see that.”

Sunderland had brought some positivity back to the Stadium of Light by beating Crystal Palace 4-0 two weekends’ ago.

However, they undid most of their hard work by losing to Southampton.

Sunderland are still rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, but they are still only two points away from safety.
