Punished: Simon Walton reacts as Leeds United are dumped out the FA Cup by Sutton

The former Leeds midfielder said the team were not switched on for the fixture.

Leeds United have been knocked out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 defeat against non-league Sutton United. The result means Sutton are into the last 16 of the FA Cup, leaving Leeds to wonder what might have been.

Watching the game for BBC Radio Leeds was former Leeds United midfielder Simon Walton. He also knows a thing or two about the non-league game and is currently signed to Guiseley in the non-league.

He made it clear on the BBC that he felt Leeds deserved to lose the game or, to be more accurate, Sutton deserved to win it.

He stated:

“From minute one to minute 94, Sutton were the better team.

“They deserved it, absolutely. You come to these places when you're not switched on and you get punished.

"There is no way of glorifying this - Leeds were second-best, all over, and they got found out. Especially given the way non-league sides are progressing now, this was never going to be easy.

"We didn't show the courage to go toe-to-toe with them and have a battle with them."

There is no doubt that Sutton were worthy winners against a poor Leeds United display. Garry Monk made several changes to the Leeds side as he looks to keep the club on a push for promotion but it appears, on this occasion, to have backfired.

Leeds will have to look at the positives. Now they are out of the FA Cup they can give 100 per cent of their focus to the Championship as they fight for a play-off spot.

Hopefully the club’s confidence won’t be damaged by this result.
