A report in The Sun has suggested that Norwich City winger Robbie Brady had the chance to join Sunderland this month, but ended up rejecting a move to the Stadium of Light for one reason.
The Black Cats are still awaiting their first signing of the winter window despite David Moyes' side's perilous position in the Premier League making it almost imperative that they strengthened their ranks this month.
Norwich's Robbie Brady
But The Sun claims that Sunderland did attempt to make a move for the 25-year-old, but were ultimately unable to bring him to the club over doubts that he had.
According to The Sun, Brady turned down the chance to join Sunderland due to the fact that he believed that they are in serious danger of suffering relegation from the Premier League and he would much rather join a team whose position in the top flight is much less precarious.
Sunderland manager David Moyes
It is hardly surprising that the Republic of Ireland international is hesitant to make Sunderland the top flight side he joins based on how the last couple of seasons have played out for him.
He has been relegated from the highest level in each of the last two seasons, and with Sunderland currently bottom of the table, he would be forgiven for being cautious about his next move before he endures the experience of suffering a third consecutive relegation.
