West Ham United are reportedly keen on Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

According to The Express, West Ham United are lining up a move for Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson – if Dimitri Payet does end up leaving the club this month.

Payet, 29, this week told manager Slaven Bilic that he wanted to leave the club, and won't be playing for the Hammers again as he looks to force a move away from the London Stadium.

The French international has been West Ham's top player since his 2015 move from Marseille, grabbing two goals and six assists this season on top of his nine goals and 12 assists from last season.

Whilst West Ham have rejected a £19million bid from Marseille for Payet (Sky Sports), there's a strong chance that the playmaker does end up forcing his way out of the London Stadium during this month's transfer window – and the Hammers must have contingency plans in case he does leave.

Now, The Express report that West Ham are keen on Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson, and could make a £20million bid to land the 27-year-old should Payet leave.

Sigurdsson, formerly of London rivals Tottenham, has starred for Swansea this season with five goals and six assists, with the Icelandic playmaker serving as the leading light in a struggling Swans side.

Swansea would put up strong resistance against any bid for their most important player as they look to battle against relegation, but West Ham will be hoping that a huge bid will tempt them into a deal.

With excellent ability to score from range as well as pinpoint set pieces, Sigurdsson can bring similar qualities to Payet and arguably on a more consistent basis, making him a smart target if Payet does leave – but whether they can convince Swansea to sell is another matter.
