The Owls currently occupy the final play-off spot in the Championship table, but given that they sit just two points ahead of seventh placed Derby County, manager Carlos Carvalhal will be targeting new signings.
Barnsley's Sam Winnall
HITC Sport understand that Barnsley striker Sam Winnall has undergone a medical with the Owls ahead of a move to Hillsborough, with the centre forward – who has hit 11 goals this season – set to boost Carvalhal's attacking options.
Wednesday may not be done raiding Barnsley just yet though, as the Daily Mail report that Carvalhal's men have enquired about a deal for Tykes midfielder Conor Hourihane as well as Winnall.
Conor Hourihane celebrates scoring for Barnsley
Hourihane, 25, has starred for Barnsley since arriving from Plymouth Argyle in 2014, with the Irishman scoring 26 goals from midfield in his first two seasons with the club.
This term, Hourihane has notched a superb five goals and 11 assists in the Championship, and Barnsley risk losing their captain given that he's out of contract at the end of the season.
Now, Wednesday are believed to be keen to reunite him with Winnall in a double swoop on their Yorkshire rivals, with an enquiry allegedly lodged regarding a deal for Hourihane.
It's added that Aston Villa are also keen on Hourihane, and Wednesday appear to be ready to battle Steve Bruce's men in the race to sign the former Sunderland youngster.
