Bookmaker BetVictor have listed Newcastle United as outside contenders to sign Grimsby Town striker Omar Bogle before the end of the January transfer window.
Bogle is one of the Football League's hottest properties currently, having enjoyed a sensational start to the season with the Mariners, scoring 18 times in 24 league games to guide his side towards the periphery of the play-off picture during their first season back in the fourth tier.
Unsurprisingly, that form has attracted the attention of several clubs in the Championship The Daily Mail reported back in November that the likes of Leeds and Nottingham Forest had been linked with the 24-year-old, while Sky Sports suggested earlier this week that Rotherham had seen an £850,000 bid rejected.
It is therefore not a surprise to see Rotherham and Forest listed as 4/1 favourites with BetVictor to land his signature before the current window closes, but it must also be noted that the Magpies are lurking at 8/1, with only Wigan listed between them and the favourites.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez
Newcastle have been excellent in front of goal in the Championship this season. No team currently comes close to the 48 goals that Rafael Benitez's men have scored, and yet it may not be a huge surprise to see them interested in another striker.
That is because while Dwight Gayle has scored 19 times, no other player in the team has scored more than four league goals, so Benitez may feel that finding another potentially lethal marksman could help their chances of remaining in the top two.
