Jenas believes that for Barkley to fulfil his potential, he needs someone to give him confidence.
“He is a good player, Ross, he is just going through a bad spell,” Jenas told BT Sport about Barkley. “The attributes are all there. He just needs somebody to give him that confidence to bring the best out of him.”
Barkley has scored three goals and created 43 chances in 18 Premier League appearances for Everton so far this season.
During the 2015-16 campaign, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder has scored eight goals and created 55 chances in 38 league matches for the Toffees.
The England international is a very promising and talented footballer, but he does need to step up, and perhaps under manager Ronald Koeman, he will do so as the season progresses.
Everton are seventh in the Premier League table at the moment with 30 points from 20 matches.
The Merseyside outfit are 12 points behind Manchester City, who are currently fourth in the standings and occupy the final Champions League spot.
The Toffees will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Everton at Goodison Park in the third round of the FA Cup.
