Sunderland's Jermain Defoe responds to rumours linking him with West Ham switch

Sunderland's Jermain Defoe

West Ham United have been linked with a move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.

During an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe admitted that it is flattering knowing that clubs are interested in securing his services in January, but insisted that he is happy at the Stadium of Light.

The 34-year-old will be absolutely vital to his side's hopes of survival this season, and has proved his importance to the team, after scoring eight goals in 18 Premier League outings thus far.

And Defoe spoke to Sky Sports regarding recent rumours linking him wth a return to his former club West Ham, playing down talk of a summer switch:

"There's going to be speculation because, let's be honest, the people that score goals are wanted. Over the years, anyone that has scored goals has been talked about in terms of moving to different clubs. I think it's just part and parcel. It's a good feeling to be wanted but when you're playing well and scoring goals then you must be enjoying being at the place you're at."

Defoe made the move to Wearside in January 2015, and has since gone on to score 30 goals in 72 outings for the Black Cats - a quite remarkable record considering the quality of the side that he has been playing in.

And David Moyes will surely do everything within his power to ensure that the striker remains at Sunderland in January, because if they lose him, there is every chance that they will wave goodbye to their hopes of survival.
