Southampton should look at Celtic’s 22-year-old defender, if they lose two of their best players over the next six months.

Southampton fans have had to endure losing some of their best players in recent years, and that trend could very well continue, with both Virgil van Dijk (the Daily Mail) and Jose Fonte (the Sun) being linked with moves away from St Mary’s.

Despite the recent exodus of some of their most valuable players, the Saints have always managed to maintain their position in the top third of the Premier League table though.

They have been able to achieve this by recruiting wisely, and having a plan in action long before they lose their star names.

Could Claude Puel continue the club’s recent trend of raiding Scottish Premiership side Celtic for one of their best players?

Should either Van Dijk or Fonte, or both for that matter, eventually leave the south coast club, they should consider a move for the Hoops’ 22-year-old Croatian centre-back Jozo Simunovic.

The defender moved to Parkhead from Dinamo Zagreb, and has since go on to establish himself as a truly top-class performer.

He is quick along the ground and, standing at 6 ft 3 in, his imposing physique allows him to be dominant in the air at the same time, which makes him fit the profile of a typical Southampton signing perfectly.

The Glasgow giants will always find it hard to resist the overtures of Premier League clubs when they come in for their prized assets.

And this would be no different, should Southampton move for Simunovic in January.

At 22, the Croatian has many more years ahead of him, where he will undoubtedly improve. He has the ingredients needed to become a world-class centre-back, and a move to the Premier League will surely become a reality at some point, if he continues to improve in the manner in which he has done during his short time in Scotland.
