Newcastle United's Christian Atsu scored during their 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic last night.

Rafael Benitez has refused to confirm whether Newcastle United will make a move to sign Christian Atsu on a permanent transfer in January, as per his comments in the Chronicle.

Atsu is currently on loan from Newcastle from Chelsea, and he has made a positive impact at St. James’ Park.

Although the winger has generally been used as an impact substitute, he has proved his worth on numerous occasions.

And Atsu once again showed his quality last night, as he stepped off the bench to score against Wigan Athletic.

Newcastle had taken the lead at the DW Stadium in the first-half when Mohamed Diame found the back of the net, but Atsu’s strike sealed the three points for the Tynesiders.

There has been suggestions that Newcastle could look to make Atsu’s switch a permanent one at the next opportunity, but Benitez would not confirm whether he wanted the move to be a longer-term one.

“At the moment he is signed up for the next game with Burton so I am pleased with that,” Benitez said.

“We don’t talk about the market now.”

Newcastle’s win at Wigan lifted them above Brighton & Hove Albion and back up to the top of the Championship table.
