Seven things Newcastle fans want for Christmas: Sels and Sissoko feature

Newcastle fans in Christmas fancy dress celebrate after Karl Darlow saves a penalty from Nottingham Forest's Henri Lansbury

All Newcastle United fans know that Santa wears black and white, not red and white...

It's been quite the year for Newcastle United. Things looked bleak at the start of the year, with the Magpies staring relegation in the face with Steve McClaren in charge. Rafael Benitez could not save them from the drop, but the Spaniard has turned around the fortunes of the club, and it looks like the Champions League winning manager will guide them back to the Premier League.

Despite being in the Championship, it is a great time to be a Newcastle fan, so what will fans want for Christmas?

1. Promotion

The main goal at Newcastle right now is to get promotion.

They look likely to do that, dominating the division, despite losing their opening two games. Newcastle have the best squad, and the best manager in the league, and the results are backing that up, so it seems all but certain that the Magpies will be celebrating promotion at the end of the season.

2. The receipt for Matz Sels

The goalkeeper arrived in the summer, but has failed to impress in between the sticks.

Sels started the season as Benitez's number one, but a string of poor performances saw Karl Darlow come in, and the former Nottingham Forest stopper has really nailed down his place in the Newcastle starting XI. Fans are still wondering why they signed Sels in the first place.

3. A montage of Moussa Sissoko's Tottenham highlights

The only tears on Tyneside when Sissoko joined Tottenham on deadline day were tears of laughter as fans could not believe they had got £30 million (BBC Sport) for a player that had let Newcastle down so often.

The Frenchman has failed to set White Hart Lane alight, and Newcastle fans would no doubt love the chance to sit down and watch the 'best bits' of Sissoko's opening months at Tottenham.

4. A contract for life for Benitez

The Spaniard has saved Newcastle, plain and simple.

The club had lost its identity and relationship with its fans, but Benitez has rebuilt Newcastle from the ground up, with the team and fans united once again. Had it not been for Benitez, who knows where Newcastle would be, and fans will be hoping that their current manager never leaves.

5. A new contract for Vurnon Anita

The versatile Dutchman's contract expires in the summer, and Newcastle fans will be hoping that Anita remains at the club.

The 27-year-old has been a key part of Newcastle's good form this season, and is well liked by Benitez due to his ability to play in a variety of positions.

6. A firing Aleksandar Mitrovic

Mitrovic is a hero at Newcastle, despite not really hitting the heights expected of him.

The Serbian had a great run in front of goal earlier in the season, and fans will be hoping he can get back to his best and help take the pressure off Dwight Gayle to score goals.

7. A trophy

The trophy drought at St James' Park goes on and on.

The Magpies were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Hull on penalties, ending dreams of a date at Wembley, but all it has done is enhanced Newcastle fans' desire to win a trophy.

It would be a gift with the future in mind, but winning a major trophy would take Benitez to legend status at the club.
