A look at what next season could have in store for the West Ham United player.
While goalkeepers usually reach their peak far later than outfield players, it will be somewhat worrying for West Ham United stopper Raphael Spiegel that at 23 he is yet to feature for the Hammers first-team.
The Swiss player has racked up 53 appearances for West Ham’s under-23 side, but with Darren Randolph and Adrian ahead of him in the pecking order, a couple of stints on the bench this season has been as good as it gets.
In those circumstances some players may be eyeing a summer exit. However in the case of Spiegel he would be wise to be a little more patient and see if, as expected, Adrian leaves on a free transfer at the end of his contract.
That would see Spiegel elevated to second choice behind Randolph, and while it remains to be see if West Ham manager Slaven Bilic dips into the transfer market for another ‘keeper, the current third option will be hoping to prove his worth in pre-season.
That could in turn see Spiegel finally make his first start for West Ham’s senior side, with cup competitions perhaps offering the likeliest short-term route into the side.
The player’s own contract expires in 2018, so next season really is make-or-break for the highly-rated young ‘keeper at the London Stadium.
