Could Tottenham Hotspur lose Toby Alderweireld?

Jermaine Jenas suggested on The Friday Football Social show on BBC Radio 5live last Friday evening (broadcast from 7pm, December 10, 2016) that Toby Alderweireld would be happy with the reported release clause in his Tottenham Hotspur contract.

The Mirror, The London Evening Standard and The Guardian were among the major British publications to carry a report claiming that Alderweireld has a £25.4 million release clause in his current Spurs contract. All the aforementioned publications cited Football Leaks as the source.

According to The London Evening Standard, Tottenham have denied such a clause, although The Guardian has claimed that the North London outfit are planning to hand the defender a new contract.

Former Spurs midfielder Jenas has given his opinion on the situation of the 27-year-old centre-back.

“From a player’s point of view, it is brilliant,” said Jenas on The Friday Football Social show on BBC Radio 5live last Friday evening (broadcast from 7pm, December 10, 2016).

“From Alderweireld’s point of view, he is sitting there going ‘Wow, I know if Real Madrid or Barcelona, or someone comes calling, I am gone'. Simple as that. Well done to his agent.”

Alderweireld is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and is arguably a world-class defender.

The 27-year-old is a key player in the current Spurs player and still has a few more years left in him at the very top level.

The Belgium international is certainly worth more than £25.4m, and it would make sense for Spurs to hand him a new deal.
