Aston Villa legend suggests his former club need to sign five players in January

Nigel Spink believes Aston Villa still need to strengthen heavily during the January transfer window.

Speaking live on BBC's West Midlands Football phone-in, ex-Villa goalkeeper Nigel Spink has outlined where his former club need to strengthen in January, suggesting that Steve Bruce needs up to five new signings in order to help guide his side back to the Premier League.

The Midlands outfit currently sit in 13th position in the Championship table, just four points behind sixth-placed Leeds United, after a fine run of just one loss in the nine games since Bruce took charge at Villa Park.

But Spink believes there is still a lot of work to be done at the club, highlighting the positions in which the Villa boss needs to improve over the course of the January transfer window, when speaking to BBC's West Midlands Football phone-in:

"Villa need two midfielders, a right-back, and another striker and possibly a goalkeeper. Kodjia isn't going to be around for a while, so they need another striker. They are the positions I would be looking to get players in."

Bruce's men have an extremely kind run of fixtures ahead of them, on paper at least, that will take them into the new year.

The average league position of their next six opponents is 15.66, so they will have a fantastic opportunity to really kick on now, and force themselves into promotion contention with a succession of victories.

If Villa do manage to strengthen in January, in the right areas, they should be in great shape to make the top-six come May, and possibly even make a late run for the automatic promotion spots.
