Jamie Redknapp explains why Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld is a rare player

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has returned from injury to go straight back into Mauricio Pochettino's starting line-up.

Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that players like Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld have become a rarity nowadays.

Alderweireld has established a reputation as one of the best players in the Premier League over the past three seasons.

And Redknapp believes that the Belgian international is a genuine leader, which is a type of player who have become uncommon in modern day football.

“There seem to be fewer leaders and organisers like Toby Alderweireld,” Redknapp said. “These days, defenders and even goalkeepers are required to play out from the back, while full backs are more like frustrated wingers.

“Defenders are thinking more about their passing stats than anything else! They are more likely to take risks and that is leading to more goals. While that is great for fans, it puts a premium on good defenders.”

Alderweireld has missed much of this season with injury, but he returned to Spurs’ starting line-up yesterday against Manchester United.

The former Atletico Madrid man was not able to help Spurs pick up the three points at Old Trafford, though, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat.

The only goal of the game was scored by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, as Spurs fell to a disappointing defeat.

Tottenham are now in fifth place in the Premier League table - three points behind Manchester City, who are in fourth spot.
