Report: West Brom make Everton's James McCarthy their number one target for January; £15m bid planned

West Bromwich Albion attempted to bring the Everton midfielder to the Hawthorns in the summer.

West Bromwich Albion have identified Everton midfielder James McCarthy as their number one target for the January transfer window after failing to land the Republic of Ireland international during the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail reports that the 26-year-old is likely to be made available along with several other fringe players within Ronald Koeman's current squad.

And that has prompted the Baggies to include McCarthy right at the top of their list of potential targets ahead of next month's window.

The Mail adds that West Brom are ready to make a £15m bid for the former Wigan Athletic man in the hope that that convinces the Merseyside outfit to sell to a Premier League rival.

While McCarthy is their number one priority, the Mail suggests that Tony Pulis has also considered a move for Manchester United's Morgan Schneiderlin, who like McCarthy, has also struggled for minutes under a new manager this season.

If the Albion were able to land one of their two targets, then they will arguably banish much of the frustration that arose following a quiet summer and undoubtedly feel much more confident about holding on to the top-half position they currently occupy in the table.
