Joselu hardly set the world alight in English football but he is certainly sparking in Spain.
All those months ago, during the heady days of summer, Stoke City’s decision to farm Joselu out to Spain and replace him with Wilfried Bony appeared to make perfect sense.
The Spaniard had struggled to settle during his one season in English football, scoring just four times in 22 Premier League appearances, while Bony’s prolific spell at Swansea, if not at Manchester City, suggested that he could be the regular goal-scorer the Potters needed to build on three successive ninth-placed finishes.
Yet, as we head towards the New Year, the Ivorian has found the back of the net just twice in 684 minutes of top flight action. Joselu, meanwhile, scored the same amount in just two minutes against the mighty Real Madrid.
Coming off the bench for only his third appearance on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, the 26-year-old demonstrated exactly why Mark Hughes was so keen to sign him in the first place; thumping a stunning drive into the top corner of Keylor Navas’s net before clipping in a cool second within the blinking of an eye.
Depor eventually conceded a last-minute goal to, guess who, Sergio Ramos as they fell to a heart-wrenching 3-2 defeat, but Joselu’s display has got Stoke fans talking.
Why have we not got Joselu at Stoke!?!? Tearing it up against Madrid! #scfc— Tom Berrisford (@TomBerrisford1) December 10, 2016
