Aston Villa edged out the Latics 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Latics produced a brave performance against Aston Villa, who snatched a 1-0 victory courtesy of Jack Grealish's 88th-minute winner yesterday.
Even then, there was little that Wigan's back four could have done as the 21-year-old found the top corner from outside the box with a fine strike.
The Villans were probably worthy winners, by virtue of their 56% and 15 shots on goal, but the 55-year-old, who spent two years as Wigan boss, says his old side should be proud of their resolute display at the back nevertheless.
"Wigan frustrated us. They were immaculate in the way they defended," he told Aston Villa's official website.
"We tried to find a way through. In the end, it took a great goal to beat them."
Aston Villa moved three points adrift of the playoff places as a result of their late win over the Latics.
They had lost 2-0 at Leeds United last time around so it was a good response from the West Midlands side and Bruce's boys will now look to continue climbing up the table.
