Premier League duo United and Tottenham have reached the round of 32 in the Europa League this campaign.
Ahead of the match between two sides on Sunday afternoon, former Wales international midfielder Savage has suggested that Jose Mourinho’s team and Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lock horns with each other in the final of the Europa League this season.
“Like Tottenham, they may have to win the Europa League to get back in the Champions League mainstream next season,” Savage wrote in The Mirror.
“But with Paul Pogba looking much brighter, Eric Bailly’s return to fitness and Henrikh Mkhitaryan beginning to hit his stride, United have nothing to fear in Europe.
“And I liked Mourinho’s classy touch of bringing on Marouane Fellaini for the last 20 minutes in Odessa on Thursday night after his cameo at Everton had an unhappy ending.
“I’m beginning to wonder if United’s game with Spurs at Old Trafford this weekend might prove to be a dress rehearsal for the Europa League final.”
Both United and Spurs started the season as Premier League title contenders, but as things stand, they may have to fight for a place in the top four of the Premier League.
One suspects that neither the Red Devils nor the North London outfit are actually keen on playing in the Europa League.
However, winning the competition would see them feature in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League campaign.
