Where are they now? Bolton’s last Premier League XI

We catch up with the last Bolton Wanderers XI to play in the Premier League.

It has been over four years since Bolton Wanderers played their final game in the Premier League. That day Bolton’s 2-2 draw away to Stoke City ended their 11-year stay in English football’s top flight.

So let’s find out what happened to those players.

A few members of that XI have since retired from the game. Last month, Coventry captain Sam Ricketts was forced to end his playing career after a persistent knee injury. There has been talk that he will make a return for the Sky Blues in a coaching role.

Zat Knight and Kevin Davies both decided to hang up their boots last season. Following a spell with MLS side Colorado Rapid, Knight returned to England with Reading in March of 2015. The defender’s career came to a close after only managing two appearances for the Royals.

Davies 10-year association with Wanderers was ended in 2013, as he made a move to League One side Preston North End. The target man helped Preston win promotion to the Championship before retiring in 2015.

After a 15-year absence, Martin Petrov returned to Bulgarian football to finish his playing career with CSKA Sofia in 2014. Meanwhile, Ivan Klasnic retired at German club FSV Mainz in 2013. The forward recently had a failed kidney transplant.

Lee Chung-yong and Marcos Alonso, who were substitutes on the day, are back playing in the Premier League. Lee left Bolton for Crystal Palace in 2015, but the South Korean midfielder has struggled to cement a place in the Eagles side under Alan Pardew.

Marcos Alonso spent time in Italian football with Fiorentina, before making a big-money switch to Chelsea in the summer. The Spanish full-back has already established himself in Antonio Conte’s plans with eight consecutive league starts.

Goalkeeper Adam Bogdan is contracted to Premier League side Liverpool. The Hungarian stopper was on-loan to Wigan Athletic before a serious knee-injury forced him to make a return to his parent club.

Two members of that matchday squad are currently playing Championship football. American defender Tim Ream plays for Fulham; while Jussi Jaakelainen is at Wigan Athletic.

Mark Davies and Josh Vela are the only two players still at Bolton. They are joined in League One by Marvin Sordell, who now turns out for Coventry City. Chris Eagles plays in the division below after arriving at Accrington Stanley in the summer.

The remaining players involved in the game against Stoke are no longer playing in English football. Former Bolton loanee Dedryck Boyata has been a Celtic player since 2015. The Belgian defender has endured a frustrating start to the season due to a thigh injury.

David N’Gog had spells with Swansea City and Reims before signing with Greek side Panionios at the end of August. Ryo Miyaichi has moved to German football with St. Pauli. The Japanese midfielder left Arsenal last year after four years at the club.

Nigel Reo-Coker is currently a free agent following his release from MLS side Montreal Impact in January.
