16-year-old Freeman is already said to have made an impression on Saints' academy coaches, and another raid on the Tannadice Park could be in the offing.
Southampton have reportedly scouted United's Jamie Robson this season, after the 18-year-old established himself on the left of Ray McKinnon's back-four - the opposite flank to where Freeman usually operates.
Robson's contract is set to enter its final 18 months, however, which could leave the Scottish Championship side vulnerable to offers in the coming transfer windows, and Freeman's progress at St. Mary's could coax his old club-mate to follow him south of the border.
Southampton's appeal speaks for itself, though, with England internationals Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, not to mention Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale, passing through the club's youth ranks.
Though the emergence of Saints' most recent academy product Sam McQueen could block Robson's path to the first team initially, the 21-year-old is said to have been courted by rival clubs and may not be around long-term.
