It has been over four years since Blackburn Rovers last played in the Premier League. That day saw already-relegated Rovers lose 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Let’s catch up with the XI that played in that match.
There is only one member of this XI that currently plays Premier League football. Scott Dann is now captain of Crystal Palace after signing from Rovers in 2014. The commanding centre-back has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Eagles.
Six of the match day squad are currently at Championship clubs. Jake Kean joined Sheffield Wednesday in the summer but he is yet to make his debut for the Owls. Kean made the switch to Wednesday from Norwich, where he was teammates with Martin Olsson. The Swedish full-back left for Norwich in 2013 and won promotion with the East Anglian side in his first season.
Martin's twin brother, Marcus Olsson, plays for Championship side Derby County. He has made thirty appearances after his move to Pride Park last January.
Canadian winger Junior Hoilett left Rovers on a free following their relegation and moved to Premier League side Queens Park Rangers. Hoilett suffered relegation with the R’s before being released this summer. He recently signed for Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City.
There are still two members of that XI who have stayed at Ewood Park. Adam Henley and Jason Lowe are both part of Owen Coyle’s squad for the Championship season.
Josh Morris and David Goodwillie, who were substitutes at Stamford Bridge, now ply their trade in the lower divisions. Morris has scored 14 goals for high-flying League One side Scunthorpe United this season; while Goodwillie is yet to find the net for League Two club Plymouth Argyle.
The man who scored for Rovers in that 2-1 defeat to Chelsea is currently without a club. Yakubu left Rovers following the defeat, and went on to have spells with Guangzhou, Al Rayyan, Reading and Kayserispor. The Nigerian is training with Hertfordshire-based club Boreham Wood, as he looks for his next move.
Vince Grella did not make it onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge, and would leave Rovers in the summer to make a return to Australian football with Melbourne Heart. However, injuries forced him into retirement after just one appearance for Melbourne. He is now a player agent in Italy, where he spent the majority of his playing career.
Grella is not the only player to hang up his boots. Gael Givet had stints back in French football with Arles-Avignon, Evian TG and FC Tours before calling time on his 17-year career.
Mauro Formica has returned to Argentinian side Newell’s Old Boys, the same team he signed for Rovers from in 2011. Morten Gamst Pedersen played in over 250 games for Blackburn in nine years at the club. The Norwegian is back in his native league playing for Tromso Idrettslag.
Substitute keeper Sebastian Usai spent time at AFC United, Cowdenbeath, Southport and Brisbane Striker before making a move to Swedish club Friska Viljor earlier this year.
Fellow substitutes Ruben Rochina, Anthony Modeste and Radosav Petrovic are also playing their football abroad. Petrovic joined Sporting CP in the summer after he was part of a Ukrainian Premier League winning Dynamo Kyiv side.
Rochina currently turns out for Rubin Kazan; while Modeste has 12 goals in 13 games for Bundesliga club FC Koln.
