HITC Sport understands talks are set to be concluded

Southampton are set to hand a new contract to Sam McQueen, HITC Sport understands.

A number of Premier League sides been linked with the 21-year-old in recent weeks, following his breakthrough into Claude Puel’s first-team at St Mary’s.

McQueen currently only has 18-months left on his current deal and HITC Sport understands that talks have been ongoing for a number of weeks over fresh terms.

Now a new contract is close to being signed, which is set to tie McQueen to the South Coast outfit until 2021.

The news of McQueen’s new deal, is now set to deter rivals from making offers in January – which Southampton had anticipated and that prompted them to engage in talks.

McQueen’s form has been a huge plus point for Southampton’s this season, and his form has even seen him linked with a call-up to the full England squad.

McQueen’s emergence also means that the news that Matt Targett has suffered a serious set-back with his hamstring injury, it not as bad as it could of been in terms of the squad.

HITC Sport understand England Under-21 ace Targett could be out for up to four months.
