The left back has established himself as a key man for Sunderland in recent seasons.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sunderland defender Patrick Van Aanholt has claimed he is capable of everything and warned that criticism only makes him a better player.

The defender suffered a difficult start to life in the North East but quickly improved under Sam Allardyce last season to play a key role in their escape from relegation.

He has continued to impress this season, consistently putting in performances despite Sunderland’s testing start to the campaign.

His confidence is clearly up and he has claimed to Sky Sports that as far as he is concerned he is capable of everything.

"I've shown what I am capable of. I can defend and attack - I am capable of everything,” he told Sky Sports.

"All those that are on my back and trying to bring me down don't help. I have been criticised lots of times but I don't care. It makes me even stronger."

Sunderland will now be hoping that Van Aanholt can continue his fine form and help them to avoid relegation again this season.

The Black Cats are currently bottom of the table with just eight points from their first 13 games of the season.

They are far from cut adrift, though, with just three points separating them from safety and they will need key players such as Van Aanholt to perform as well as possible to help them get out of that predicament.
