Odds slashed; bookies make Arsenal new favourites to sign mercurial West Ham talent

West Ham United's Dimitri Payet shoots at goal

Arsenal have been made new favourites in the race to sign West Ham United star Dimitri Payet.

Popular bookmarks SkyBet have installed Arsenal as the new 5/1 favourites in the race to sign Hammers superstar Dimitri Payet.

The Frenchman's future at West Ham was shrouded in doubt last month, when he admitted that he is not closing any doors with regards to a January exit from the club during an interview with French TV station Telefoot, and quoted via Sky Sports:

"We've had a very poor start. Leave in January? I'm asking other questions right now but I've closed the door to nothing."

And now SkyBet have made the Gunners the new favourites to sign the 29-year-old, after slashing their odds from 20/1 into 5/1.

Manchester United are second in the race to sign Payet, according to SkyBet, and are listed at 8/1.

The former Marseille man has failed to hit the heights of last season, and with him set to turn 30 in March, January could be the last transfer window where the France international would still command a substantial transfer fee.

It is debatable, however, where he would fit into the Arsenal team, should a move come to fruition.

It's not as though the Gunners are short in the attacking midfield area, but with someone as talented as Payet, who knows how significant an effect he could have on Arsene Wenger's squad.
