Everton fans react on Twitter to Wayne Rooney's suspension

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is unavailable for Manchester United against former club Everton this weekend.

Wayne Rooney's quest to become Manchester United's record goalscorer has been delayed after the club captain picked up a booking last night.

The yellow card against West Ham was his fifth of the season and rules him out of the match against former club Everton at Goodison Park this weekend.

While debate will rage on and on as to whether Manchester United are a better side with or without Wayne Rooney, there was a sense of inevitability that the England international could create history at his old stomping ground.

Rooney is one shy of Sir Bobby Charlton's club record total of 249, and is looking to equal or better the club icon.

He won't be doing it at Goodison Park, but Manchester United have a number of options, with Rooney very much replaceable these days despite his talents.

Juan Mata was among those rested for last night's 3-1 victory over West Ham, and is likely to come back into the side for the fixture.

United are just one place above Everton in the Premier League table, adding further incentive for both sides to get a result.
