West Ham United were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United in the EFL Cup last night.
Dean Ashton has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of West Ham United’s match against Manchester United, that he could not understand Slaven Bilic’s decision to make so many changes to his starting line-up yesterday evening.
West Ham rotated their squad around at Old Trafford, with many of their fringe players being allowed a run out in the EFL Cup quarter final.
And Bilic’s plan backfired, as West Ham put in a very poor display and fell to a 4-1 defeat.
The Hammers rarely threatened in the match, and Jose Mourinho’s side made them pay.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired the Red Devils in front early on, and although Ashley Fletcher struck an equaliser, West Ham could not stay on level terms for long.
An Anthony Martial double was followed up by a Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike in the second-half, and Ashton criticised Bilic for not picking his strongest team for such an important fixture.
“I’m not too sure [why Bilic changed his team],” Ashton said. “It’s the quarter final of a cup. I’d be playing my best team. Yes, they have got a few injuries, but you have to try and win the game and keep confidence flowing.”
Manchester United will now face Hull City in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, as Mourinho looks to deliver his first major trophy to Old Trafford.
West Ham, meanwhile, will be forced to focus on the league campaign - with Bilic’s side next in action at the weekend against Arsenal.
