Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 30th November, that Newcastle United’s defeat against Hull City should serve as a warning as to how much investment is needed to enable them to compete at Premier League level if they are promoted this season.
Newcastle currently lead the way in the Championship, after making a highly impressive start to the new campaign.
However, the Magpies were unable to get past struggling Hull at the KCOM Stadium last night in the EFL Cup.
Newcastle had taken the lead in extra time, when Mohamed Diame found the back of the net, but they were unable to hold on to their advantage.
Matz Sels spilled a long range shot in the path of Robert Snodgrass, and the Scottish international tapped in from close range to send the match to penalties.
Newcastle then went on to lose the shoot out, after missing three of their four spot kicks.
And Wilkins feels that Newcastle should now realise how tough it will be for them, if they do return to the Premier League next season.
“I just goes to show the gap between Premier League and Championship. It’s an eye opener for the Championship, to show that if they get promoted they do have to reinforce dramatically,” Wilkins said.
Hull have picked up 11 points from their opening 13 Premier League matches this season, and they currently sit in 18th place in the top flight standings.
